West Civ Essay 1

I believe that Jared Diamond had the right idea when he mentioned "geographical luck". Geographical Luck refers to the idea that where your people settled or where you were born is just luck. The plants and resources that were utilized from early people was just luck says Diamond. Since they had no idea what they actually were though something attracted them to that area. Was it the water and the resources they could collect? Could it be the animals and livestock or the fertile land? It seems that all of these points must to have led the beginning of civilization of course this had to occur over a long period of time. If you look back at Mesopotamia, one of the first civilizations,  it settled it between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers better known as the "Fertile Crescent". If you move a little more south Egypt who settled on the Nile river and the Nile's mighty Delta. These two areas are known for there vast crop fields and their dense livestock farms. The two civilizations were defiantly blessed with geographical luck. Since they didn't intentionally move there it was most likely done by accident. That is why Geographical luck is a sustainable probability.

  1. You were close on Diamond's theory, but not quite there. You also could have used more discussion of the actual plants and animals that early man domesticated, to help relate to Diamond's theory.
